Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences and Technologies
The scientific activities of the Area of Earth, Environmental and Marine Sciences and Technologies are devoted to the promotion of environmental sustainability of any industrial development.
Two priorities are the pillars of this Area:
1) Energy: development of effective and efficient alternatives to fossil fuels;
2) Environment: reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions;
Since 2008, the ICS Area of Environment has included Renewable Energy Sources among its research and capacity building main concerns and has identified Geothermal Energy as a core programme for scientific training and research activities.
The peculiar characteristics of geothermal energy make it particularly appealing as a stable, reliable, cost effective and environmentally friendly solution for the energy challenge of the third millennium. The Geothermal Energy Programme for 2009 focused on scientific research for exploration and optimum exploitation of geothermal resources, investigation of energy conversion technologies, and dissemination of these contributions for geothermal and industrial development, in coordination and cooperation with international geothermal institutions, research centres and Universities.

In the past, the Area of Environment implemented other programmes (such as industrial utilization of medicinal and aromatic plants, cleaner production etc.) which have now been discontinued.
