Abstract

The heat stored in the Earth's interior is a clean, stable and cost-effective energy source that is used in production of electricity and in several direct uses, such as heating and cooling and food processing. New technologies open promising routes and can foster exponential increments of the present 60,000 GWh of electrical energy produced and more than 20,000 GWh used in heating/cooling systems. While energy plans worldwide invest in geothermal solutions, ICS-UNIDO is implementing scientific, training and networking activities in the sector to support a more extended use of geothermal energy.
