Fellowships on Drug Design
Capacity building in developing countries and countries in economic transition is a key step to reach a critical mass of competences in research addressing this field. Young scientists from cooperating centres in developing countries are trained, but also actively participate in our research programme taking benefit from ICS and its partners' in-house expertise in computer modelling, organic and combinatorial synthesis. Upon termination of the fellowship, researchers are expected to return to their home institutions to share their knowledge with the scientific community, apply the results of the training and research activity and sustain cooperation at local, regional level and with ICS as well.
Examples of work recently carried out by ICS fellows include
Advanced Computer Design:
- New inhibitors of pf Enoyl Acyl Carrier Reductase (pfENR) (Ivory Coast; Cameroon)
- New inhibitors of MbT Thymidylate Kinase (mbtTMK) (India; South Africa)
- New inhibitors of HIV aspartic protease mutants and HIV integrase enzymes (China; Thailand)
- Design and synthesis of analogs inhibiting neuraminidase of avian influenza virus H5N1 (India)
- Combinatorial design of avian influenza neuraminidase inhibitors containing pyrrolidine core with reduced susceptibility to viral drug resistance (Thailand)
Molecular Modelling:
- Computer modelling of interaction of cellulose with hydrolytic enzymes - cellulases (India)
- Molecular modelling of transesterification process In biodiesel production (Brazil).
