Telecommunications technlogies
In many developing countries rural areas are generally cut-off
from fully participating in national and international social and
economic activities because of the lack of suitable information and
communication technology (ICT) infrastructures.
The capacity of ICT to offer real improvements within the rural
communities is foreseen by enabling the local people to develop new
skills, services and opportunities. Promoting the establishment of
telecentres, for instance, would facilitate the integration of
isolated rural populations and act as catalyst in agricultural and
industrial development as well as in the diffusion of information
for educational and health purposes.
Main objectives pursued
- To support the application of ICT enabled services in selected rural centres through a scalable and cost effective communication infrastructure
- To improve the economic and social value of rural communities and market centres
- To provide capacity building and facilitation to community groups to increase usage, understanding and value of ICT as a tool to improve local services and information provision
