Laser applications

Lasers are fundamental components of systems used in industry, information technology devices, measuring systems (i.e. for metrology), optical communications, medicine, environmental monitoring, and generally speaking for research in all scientific fields.

Countries such as Argentina, Brazil, India and China produce laser sources and laser systems for industrial or medical applications. Many other countries, even if not producers (in some cases they may be far from this capability) are trying to introduce the use of lasers in different fields of the economy, for instance to assist SMEs to became providers of multinational companies. Hence, by facilitating access to new laser technologies, industrial laboratories and SMEs will be able to maintain, and possibly increase, the employment level as well as to enter into new globalized markets.

Furthermore, the laser industrial process has a significant local market even in developing countries: with a relatively low cost investment, the possibility of the spin off and/or the set up of new SMEs is significant.

Main objectives pursued

  • To stimulate awareness of the opportunities offered by laser systems in the manufacturing process mainly for SMEs, as a key instrument to deal with global markets (new products, subcontracting with large multinational companies, etc.)
  • To train experts in different fields of competence in the use of laser technologies that are cost-effective and offer opportunities for innovation as well as for spin-offs and/or new investment projects
