Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

GIS stores information about the world as a collection of specific-parameter layers that can be linked together by geography. Software utilized include:

  • GRASS (GIS) Geographic Resources Analysis Support System, commonly referred to as GRASS, is a public domain (free) Geographic Information System used for data management, image processing, graphics production, spatial modelling, and the presentation of many types of data.
  • IDRISI (GIS) couples the extensive analytical capabilities of the GIS and Image Processing System with a highly interactive graphical user interface. The software can access all raster graphic displays, analytical operations and multiple map windows with full multi-layer map composition capability. It provides raster analytical functionality covering the full spectrum of GIS and Remote Sensing needs from database query, to spatial modelling, to image enhancement and classification. Special facilities include environmental monitoring and natural resource management, change and time series analysis, multi-criteria and multi-objective decision support, uncertainty analysis and simulation modelling.
  • ArcGIS desktop mapping and GIS software. Has hundreds of mapping and spatial analysis capabilities. ArcView allows easy creation of maps and adds customized data to them. Using ArcView software's poweful visualization tools, records from existing databases can be accessed and displayed on maps and therefore thematic maps can be created. With Avenue, ArcView software's built-in object-orirented scripting language, custom tools, interfaces, and complete applications can be quickly developed.
  • ERDAS (Image Engineering) offers a flexiable and scalable solution for image input, management, display and enhancement, spectral analysis, digital photogtammetry, GIS data integration and map composition. Imagine provides a robust set of tools for geocorrection, image analysis, visualization, and map output. Imagine has powerful and flexible orthorectification tools, and its advanced imaging functions. Imagine provides radar analysis, advanced classification tools, and graphical spatial data modelling.
